Due to its location, Carvoeiro has always been an area of interest throughout time, since the Roman Empire, which is proved by archaeological finds – a Roman stock and anchor.
This location also witnessed attacks from North African pirates, as well as the ensuing battles between the D. Pedro da Cunha Armada and Turkish Corsair Xarramet, around 1544.
The name Carvoeiro originates from an era when the region was inhabited by medieval fishermen of Arabian origin, deriving from the word "Caboiere", which means old fishing hamlet.
